During staying Cambodia, When talking about fishing, people must remember the Tonle Sap Lake (Biggest natural lake in the kingdom of Cambodia). It is said to be around 600 different kinds of fish in this Amazing Giant Lake. That is why most of Khmer people live their lives as fishermen and farmers.
The ways they fish still depend on traditional fishing yet. Unlike in other developing countries are using modern fishing equipment. Fortunately, people can fish in all seasons include main dry season and rainy season. They may catch fish, frogs, crabs, snails, snakes, tortoises,… from the field , pond, lake or river nearby.
Generally, they have different techniques to fish according the location they live in and the tradition they hold. Now I will show you some of the popular fishing methods they often use to catch fish as following:
- Throwing a fishing net which is use for all seasons
- A long net which can be dragged through the water for catching big fish
- A mosquito net is sometimes used as a net where fast running streams exist
- Fish traps made of bamboo which made in various sizes and shapes are set in the lake or field during the wet season
- Mud fishing during the summer season. Some types of fish stay in the mud during the summer season therefore the Khmer sift through the mud once the water recedes. They catch shrimps, mud fish, cat fish, crabs, snails and eels
- Fish farms are very popular nowadays
- In some ways, branches and twigs are placed close together in small ponds and this attracts fish to breed. So they can catch them easily when dry season coming
- Digging a pit is an amazing way to catch a handful of fish in just a night. This fishing method is usable only in windy season
